Good questions.
Straight answers about permissions, privacy, and how Kachunk works.
- Why does Kachunk need the Input Monitoring permission?
- Kachunk plays a sound for every keystroke in every app, so it has to know when a key goes down anywhere on your Mac. macOS gates that behind the Input Monitoring permission. Kachunk reads which key went down only to pick that key’s sound and stereo position, plays it, and immediately forgets it — nothing is recorded. It uses Input Monitoring only, not the broader Accessibility permission.
- Is Kachunk recording what I type?
- No. Keystrokes are never recorded, stored, or transmitted. Kachunk reacts to each key press, plays a sound, and forgets it. And this is not just a promise: the app runs in the App Sandbox with no network entitlement, so macOS itself enforces that Kachunk can never send anything anywhere. No analytics, no accounts.
- Does Kachunk hear my passwords?
- No — there is nothing to hear. macOS suppresses keyboard events in password and other secure input fields, so Kachunk stays silent while you type passwords; those keystrokes never reach the app at all.
- Is Kachunk on the Mac App Store?
- Yes — Kachunk is coming exclusively to the Mac App Store. The app is fully sandboxed and Store-ready; a one-time purchase, with updates arriving automatically through the Store.
- Will it slow down my typing?
- No. Kachunk listens to keystrokes without touching them (a listen-only tap), so nothing is added to your input path. Sounds are pre-loaded and pre-converted to your audio device format at launch, and a 16-voice audio pool keeps up with the fastest typing.
- Which Macs does it run on?
- Kachunk requires macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later. It works with any keyboard — the built-in one or any external board.
- How do I pause or turn it off?
- Click the keyboard icon in your menu bar and flip the toggle. There is also a volume slider and a sound-pack picker in the same place. Kachunk lives entirely in the menu bar — no Dock icon.
- Is Kachunk free?
- Kachunk will be a $4.99 one-time purchase at launch — no subscription, no account.
- Where do the sounds come from?
- Every pack was recorded from a real mechanical switch — Cherry MX Blue, Holy Panda, NovelKeys Cream, Topre, and more. The recordings are adapted from open-source community projects (Mechvibes, kbsim, clicketyclack, all MIT-licensed); see the credits page for full attribution.
- How do I report a bug or get in touch?
- Email support@kachunk.app — bug reports, questions, and sound-pack requests are all welcome. Mentioning your macOS version, the Kachunk version, and the sound pack you were using helps a lot. There is also an Email Support link in the app under Settings → About, which fills those details in for you.
- How do I uninstall Kachunk?
- Quit Kachunk from the menu bar, then drag the app from Applications to the Trash. That is all — Kachunk installs nothing else. You can also remove it from System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring afterwards.
